Anonymous Supporter Donates $50,000 to Algonquin Arts

August 27, 2009

Manasquan, NJ An anonymous supporter recently donated $50,000 to Algonquin Arts nonprofit theatre to support the 2009/2010 Season. The donation was made in honor of his late wife, Marialana, who was a dedicated Algonquin Arts volunteer for many years. To recognize this very generous gift, Algonquin Arts will acknowledge Marialana in all publications and marketing materials for the 2009/2010 Family Series.

When speaking of his wife, the donor stated, She was a child advocate. She worked as a school nurse and guidance counselor for thirty-five years. In her memory, I wanted to make this donation to further programming for children.

Algonquin Arts was founded in 1992 as a nonprofit corporation to promote and advance artistic, social, literary, education, and community theatrical endeavors in Central New Jersey. Algonquin Arts outreach programs bring cultural and educational programs to schools, community centers, and long-term adult care facilities throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties. In its first full season, Algonquin Arts attracted 9,000 people to 54 events. Today, more than 90,000 people, 26,000 of them schoolchildren, attended 217 programs in the 540-seat Algonquin Arts Theatre.

Approximately 40% of Algonquin Arts operating expenses are covered by donated contributions. But, as everyone is aware, the economic climate today has greatly hurt arts organizations. Federal, state and local funding has all been drastically cut Algonquin Arts saw a devastating 30% cut in funding from the state this year. Private foundations and grant opportunities have also cut the amount of money they can give, and some have stopped accepting new proposals altogether. In turn, donations from individual supporters make it possible for Algonquin Arts to thrive and continue bringing culturally enriching and entertaining programs to the Jersey Shore.

Those interested in making a donation to Algonquin Arts should call Brett Colby, Development Coordinator, at 732.528.4336 or email [email protected]. Donations can also be made online by visiting www.algonquinarts.org and clicking on the Donate Online link.

Programming of Algonquin Arts is made possible as a result of the continued philanthropic support of private citizens and organizations such as New Jersey State Council on the Arts, OceanFirst Foundation, PNC Foundation, Manasquan Savings Bank, Womans Club of Brielle, Investors Savings Bank Charitable Fund, Verizon Foundation, Janice Blanton Plangere, and Jules Plangere III, as well as many generous individuals and local businesses.
