MANASQUAN, N.J. (May 4, 2015) - "Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek."
And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess. Throw in a short tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude, and dozen fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero.
That hero, Shrek, takes the Algonquin Arts Theatre stage from May 9 through May 17 for six performance of "Shrek the Musical," a topsy-turvy, side-splitting fairy tale based on the Oscar-winning film.
Asbury Park's Jay Giberson stars as Shrek in his Algonquin debut, while Monroe's Courtney Elliott returns from the cast of "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Radio Hour" to star as Princess Fiona. Also returning in lead roles are Tyler Cicardo (Toms River) as donkey, while Gina Lupi (Freehold) as Gingy, Jan Topoleski (Brick) as Lord Farquaad and Jennifer Nelson (Brielle) as the dragon.
They are joined on stage by a cast of more than 50 to play a who's who of fairy tale favorites including Pinocchio, the Mad Hatter, Peter Pan, the Wicked Witch, the three bears, the three little pigs, the three blind mice, Sleeping Beauty, Tinkerbell, the Ugly Duckling, Cinderella, Puss in Boots and so many more.
Evening performances of "Shrek the Musical" are on Saturdays, May 9 & 16 and Friday, May 15 at 7 p.m. There is a Sunday matinee on May 10 at 3 p.m. and a Saturday matinee on May 16 at 2 p.m. The closing performance on May 17 is sold out. This production is sponsored by Homecare for Children.
Tickets start at are $29 for adults, $26 for seniors and $20 for students and are available online at algonquinarts.org, by phone at 732-528-9211 or in person at the Algonquin Box Office at 173 Main Street in Manasquan from 12-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 12-4 p.m. on Saturdays. Each ticket subject to a $2 processing fee.
Based on the DreamWorks Animation film, "Shrek The Musical" is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori ("Thoroughly Modern Millie") and a hilarious book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage, and proves there's more to the story than meets the ears. "Shrek" is based on the motion picture and the book by William Steig.
This Algonquin production is directed by Ian Moore and co-directed by Julie Nagy, and is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
"Shrek" is the final show in the Algonquin's 2014-15 Broadway Series sponsored by Manasquan Savings Bank. Recently, the Algonquin announced that Tony Award-winning musicals "Hairspray" and "Cabaret" will take the stage in summer 2015.
