With his fiery, poignant, soulful singing style, Richie Havens has remained unique and ageless since his historic appearance at Woodstock back in 1969. He has performed for over 30 years, produced over
25 albums, and now, for the first time ever, will perform live at Algonquin Arts on Saturday, May 16 at 8 p.m.
Mr. Havens is known for performing songs about brotherhood and personal freedom. In an interview with The Denver Post, Mr. Havens said, “I really sing songs that move me. I’m not in show business. I’m
in the communications business. That’s what it’s about for me.”
His most recent collection of songs is featured on his album, “Nobody Left to Crown,” released in July 2008 under Verve Records. “Nobody Left to Crown” demonstrates that Mr. Havens has never been more
relevant than he is today.
“Songs that I wrote at the time are more pertinent today than ever, with this connection that links Vietnam and Iraq,” Mr. Havens said.
Mr. Havens has also appeared on many television programs and acted in four films. Highlights include appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.”
On “The Tonight Show,” the audience reacted with such enthusiasm that the applause continued even after the commercial break. Because of this, Johnny Carson asked Mr. Havens to return the following night.
During that show’s long history, the only other guest that was booked on back-to-back nights because of the audience’s reaction was Barbara Streisand.
Tickets to see Mr. Havens perform live at Algonquin Arts are $42 for adults and $40 for seniors and students. Group rates are also available.
